Watch this:
Steamboy (trailer)

It's only a minute and thirteen seconds long but it should give you some idea of what you're dealing with.

I think the steampunk movement really took off after the "Steamboy" cartoon came out.

Check this out for more information: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steampunk

My Umbrella Corporation guys and I ran into quite a few Steampunks at Metrocon back in June.  They had some really neat outfits that emphasize creativity and individualism.

I'm not the expert here, but I think if you imagine a world where most of the technology is steam engine based, mixed with Victorian attire, and some brass / cast iron prostetics, even some steam powered ones thrown in, you'll be on the right track.  Think of Dr. Loveless' steam powered wheel chair and his steam powered giant spider thing in the latest version of Wild West starring Will Smith.  Think of balloons, dirigibles, and zeppelins using steam powered engines.  Think of Chiti Chiti Bang Bang.  Think of watching the movie or series so you can see for yourself.  Think of calling my ex-girlfriend, who works for a company that markets steam punk stuff, and asking her.

Lol :-)
I love Steampunk style! It was a side theme of our wedding! Its really all about the gadgets (being futuristic technology that is "powered" by steam and clock work) and top hats!!!!!! I love tops hats!!! googles, robots, victorian attire ect. Its really started as a genre of books I do belive (similar to cyber punk) and a few movies have been around to give it more recognizable vision. But I personaly first heard about the style years ago when looking at people who make steampunk gadgets. They make awsome laptops, clocks, ipods! Also it has been a popular side theme at Burning man for a couple years. I really dont associate steampunk with music at all just your typical goth/industrial music with a different outfit :-)

I don't have a like I can post from the work laptop directly to her site, but I know my pal Emily's site is
http://www.myspace.com/moonmaiden_clothing

She makes a lot of stuff that can fit into the steampunk look, and is happy to make custom pieces if you're really really nice to her an her husband.

Her husband also makes custom gas masks that are insane.  The more elaborate ones hae led's, fans (to keep from fogging) and other such things.

I'm also trying to get them to go on the 2010 cruise, but he is resistant.

Abney Park is really good in concert. They've played DragonCon the past few years and I saw them when I attended.  Captain Robert is really a fun guy too.

Most of the steampunk bands seem to come out of Washington State. There is another really good one I forgot to mention, Deadly Nightshade Botanical Society.
The clothing is sort of replica of the styles worn in Chitty Chitty bang bang. I never thought of that. I love that movie. LOL
A Steampunk cruise would be awesome!

Why not do a steampunk cruise aboard a steam powered, paddle wheel driven, big white floating hotel looking, river boat?
